What is Sexual Addiction?
What is sexual Addiction?
An addiction is defined as the compulsive need for and use of a habit forming substance known by the user as harmful. The substance we are talking about here is sex. Sex itself is not harmful unless you use it in a wrong way. How do we use sex in a wrong way?
Anytime sex is used outside of a marriage it is wrongly used and harmful. The bible gives examples of forbidden sexual practices:
Homosexuality: (1 Cor 6:9 – Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders) & (Lev 18:22 – Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable)
Bestiality; – Lev 18:23 – Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.
Adultery & fornication – Heb 13:7 – Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
Homosexuality, bestiality, adultery, and sexually immoral behavior; pornography, sex before marriage, molestation and other perversions are all not permitted. Any of these practices are outside of what God intended sex for. God made sex to be a powerful bonding agent (as well as to create new life) to bring a man and wife together. Sex used any other way takes this powerful act and bonds you to something harmful. Each one of these forbidden sexual practices carries with it danger and consequences. Homosexuals, fornicators and adulterers get STDs and other medical conditions when they use sex in a wrong way. Unwanted pregnancies and strained relationships are also the result of fornication and adultery. Molestation leaves emotional scars on its victims and the perpetrators go to jail. Sex with animals leads to diseases and mental problems. Use of pornography has many detrimental effects on its users and it often leads them to more dangerous behaviors with devastating results.
These sexual perversions can become habit forming leading the person practicing them to experience more of the consequences associated with them. A person is an addict when they find themselves attracted over and over to the very thing that is harmful to them. The homosexual will go back out searching for risky illicit sex. The adulterer will pick up another prostitute and risk getting an STD. The porn addict will waste another 4 hours watching sex on the internet and neglect his spouse. The addicted person will participate in these harmful activities acting out of an inner drive that they cannot override.
Sexual addiction is very hard to break free from. It is not impossible. In future updates I want bring some sexual addiction testimonials from people who have broken the addictive cycle in their lives. We will also discuss how to overcome sexual addiction.
