Prescriptions for Porn, Will your HMO cover it?

May 22, 2009

Newsweek just ran a story:  What fixes low Testosterone best: Meds or Porn?

The story brings to light the next miracle drug along the lines of Viagra – Androgel.  Androgel is supposed to raise testosterone levels in aging men, to help bring back their sex drives and love life.  That in itself is not wrong, what guy doesn’t want to keep his performance levels at their best.

The makers of Androgel are going to pitch this drug along the same lines that Viagra and all the other ED drugs do.  They will try to make low-T levels as a recognizable symptom as ED had become.  How many of you knew about ED before Viagra?  Probably not many.

This article then provides the alternative to Androgel- Porn.  Why Porn?  Research has shown that sexual activity & viewing sex acts has been shown to increase testosterone levels.  Newsweek makes the case that because porn is cheap and easily available that it is a legitimate alternative.

I must however give them credit for listing some of the downfalls of using porn, such as:  An angry wife, the chances of getting caught at work, and the chances of becoming addicted to it.

Porn as a drug.  Porn use is very similar to illicit drug use.  They euphoric feelings the user gets are very similar to those of cocaine.   They cite the statistic for becoming addicted to porn as more than one in ten users.  That is kind of vague.  More than one – are we talking two or 8 of ten users of porn become addicted?

How about this for an alternative to porn – put that energy into persuing your wife to make love regularly?  The payoff is not only in the testosterone levels, but your relationship will get better.

This article seems to be following a trend I have been seeing recently in the news.  That is the normalization of pornography.  Are the people in the news trying to push pornography into the mainstream on purpose?  I think so.

Just like gay and lesbian lifestyles have been “mainstreamed” so that those who oppose those lifestyles are considered intolerant, will Pornography come to that point as well?  I hope not.
